The newly developed 33MP Exmor R full-frame sensor features a back-illuminated design that promotes high clarity, low noise, and vivid color rendering. This design benefits working in low-light conditions and works in conjunction with a broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200. The sensor’s design also achieves an impressive dynamic range of approximately 15 stops and files can be recorded in raw, JPEG, or the 10-bit HEIF format.

BIONZ XR Processor

The Sony a7 IV 33MP Mirrorless Camera Using the flagship-class BIONZ XR engine, high-speed image processing capabilities are available for fast continuous shooting, 4K video recording, and advanced AF tracking performance. The quick processing also helps to reduce rolling shutter and other motion distortions for the clean rendering of moving subjects. In terms of shooting speeds, the sensor and processor enable up to 10 fps shooting, using either the mechanical or electronic shutter and with AF/AE enabled. Also, the buffer permits recording up to 828 consecutive uncompressed raw + JPEG frames when using a CFexpress Type A card.

Full pixel readout without binning allows 4K 60p recording, and when recording 4K movies at 30p, full-frame 7K oversampling22 produces high-resolution, highly detailed 4K. 10-bit 4:2:2 video can be recorded internally, allowing fuller, more natural gradations and greater editing freedom. The XAVC HS file format provides roughly twice the coding efficiency of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.

Optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization for 5.5-step compensation

The sony α7 IV’s high-precision stabilization unit and gyro sensors work with stabilization algorithms to achieve up to 5.5 steps of shutter-speed compensation, to maximize the performance of the camera’s 33.0MP sensor. This in-body stabilization allows effective use with a wide range of lenses. The live monitor view shows the stabilized still image while the shutter button is half-pressed, an especially helpful feature when using a telephoto or macro lens, and it can be used in conjunction with the MF Assist and Focus Magnifier features.
